Don’t Let Halloween Candy Destroy Your Cosmetic Dentistry

When you have healthy teeth that look flawless thanks to excellent cosmetic dentistry, you may feel like you’re invincible, especially when it comes to all that tempting Halloween candy. Good teeth like yours can’t possibly be damaged, right? Beware, ghosts and goblins! The wrong kind of candy, the wrong bite… it could all go sour and fast.

Beware of Lingering Dental Zombies

Hard candies are some of the most tempting treats for people who want to avoid overindulging in Halloween candy at home or on the job. The last thing you want is to fill your belly – and expand your waistline – because of some lax willpower in October. Enter lollipops, jawbreakers, and other hard candies, some that last for hours.

Logically, this makes sense – one long-lasting candy should prevent you from eating too many sweets. However, this technique could end up destroying your oral health if it’s a trick you rely on repeatedly. Bathe all your teeth in sugar for any length of time without brushing and flossing and you’re setting up ideal conditions for tooth decay to grow.

Your teeth can even develop cavities under some cosmetic dentistry treatments, which means you’ll end up not only needing a repair for the decay, but also for the cosmetic dentistry which may need to be removed to get the work done. If you’re going to eat candy, it’s better to dig into a bunch of pieces all at one time, satisfy your craving, brush, then move on.

Watch Out for Spooky Sweets

Back to those hard candies. They could cause other dental problems for you – breaks, chips, and cracks. Done with your lollipop? Want to get to the gum or taffy center? You may be tempted to bite down on the crystallized sugar. When that happens, you always run the risk of breaking a tooth or a piece of dental work.

A porcelain veneer could chip. A tooth-colored filling could break. A porcelain crown could crack and come off. Yes, candy is tough enough to break even your super-strong, super-permanent cosmetic dentistry. And the last thing you want to do is have to call your Haymarket dentist on November 1 for emergency dental work because of Halloween candy.

We Get Chills from the Chewy Stuff

Think you’re safe if you eat chewy candy instead? Not so fast. Gummy candies, taffies, caramel, and anything with a little stick can pull at your cosmetic dentistry in no time. If your teeth stick together after an Airhead, a gummy worm, or candy with a chewy center, then they can stay stuck enough that when they pull apart they take some dental work with them.

Plus, just like the hard candy, chewy candy will get stuck in between your teeth as well as clinging to the visible enamel. Sweets that latch on like ivy and don’t let go are a hotbed of activity. Let it all sit there for any length of time and you risk cavities and dental damage.

Keep Your Teeth Safe on Halloween

Your Haymarket dentist wants you to have a Happy Halloween and enjoy some delicious treat. Do your best to stick to pure chocolate candies that are sweeter to your teeth and slide right off. You still need to brush and floss thoroughly, but there is a far smaller likelihood of damage to your smile makeover.
