Using dentures to repair the smile after tooth loss or extraction
In the past, the idea of a full denture or “false teeth” used to bring back memories of grandparents and great-grandparents with obviously false dental restorations and appliances. Dentures often got a bad rap as a fake-looking restoration that was difficult to manage and keep in place. Fortunately, the traditional complete denture has come a long way, and patients have options when choosing restorations after tooth loss. Drs. Sina Reangber and Scott Koo and the team at Lifetime Smiles assist patients in the communities of Haymarket and Gainesville, Virginia, with their tooth replacement needs and may still recommend the use of dentures to replace one or more teeth in the smile.
What type of dentures are available?
Types of dentures that patients may select from Lifetime Smiles include:
- Traditional complete dentures – the appliance patients are most familiar with is conventional complete dentures, sometimes called full dentures. These dentures use high-quality acrylic to create false teeth and gums that replace all the teeth within the dental arch. They are custom-made and are considered a removable denture that is held in the mouth with denture adhesive.
- Removable partial dentures – this is another removable option typically used when patients miss one or several teeth within the dental arch. This removable denture is made of an acrylic and metal framework and allows patients to replace several teeth affordably.
- Permanent dentures – also known as implant-supported or implant-retained dentures, this permanent denture is more conservative. It is held in place with four to six dental implants along the dental arch. It is the best way to replace all the teeth in the dental arch while ensuring the restoration remains in place, allowing patients to enjoy all their favorite foods without worry!
