When should I see a dentist for an emergency?

You should see a dentist if you have a broken tooth, your crown comes off, or a temporary crown comes off. If you fall and have lacerations, cuts, a broken jaw, or if you can't open your mouth, these are reasons to call a dentist. If you have a cut on your face or lip that is open, we typically advise you to go to the emergency department. Swelling that affects your breathing also requires a visit to the emergency department. However, for issues related to a single tooth, a cracked tooth, a filling coming out, a crown coming off, or sharp pain when chewing, you should contact your dentist.

What are common dental emergencies?

Common dental emergencies we see include patients breaking teeth. Often, if a front tooth chips or breaks, they call us. Other issues include crowns or temporary crowns coming off, and pain from chewing or sensitivity to hot or cold. We also frequently see children's dental emergencies, such as when a child falls and a tooth is pushed inward. These are some of the common situations we address.

If you are experiencing any of the following signs or symptoms, you may need to call LifeTime Smiles for emergency dental care:

  • Mouth injury/trauma
  • Symptoms of an abscess
  • Loose or lost dental restoration (crowns, bridges, etc.)
  • Bleeding or tender gums
  • Knocked out, loose, or dislodged tooth
  • Broken or chipped teeth
  • Jaw injury
  • Severe toothache/pain
  • A fever with a toothache

Emergency dental extractions

Emergency dental extractions are typically needed when there's swelling that can affect your airway, infection, or pus. If you can't open your mouth or have broken teeth causing infections, these are times when you may need an emergency extraction.

Emergency root canals

Emergency root canals are usually necessary when an infection occurs in the tooth, often due to a large, untreated cavity. Bacteria enter the tooth and create a bacteria factory inside, producing more bacteria. The bacteria can become trapped inside the jawbone, causing gases that lead to severe pain, discomfort, or significant swelling. In such cases, we need to see you for emergency root canal treatment.
